Male Pattern Hair Loss FAQ

1. Is hair loss or “Male Pattern Hair Loss” always considered to be genetic?
No. Each strand of hair is genetically encoded with a timeline that includes, growing hair, resting, and shedding hairs. On average aprox. 120 hairs per day are expected to shed from your scalp, however a majority of these hairs grow back because the follicle remains intact and active.

Follicles may also become dormant and die due to certain genetic factors. Hair loss is NOT gender specific, however males are more susceptible to the hormone called DHT or “Dihydrotestosterone.” When there is a genetic link to DHT, hair follicels begin to shrink and eventually die off which will eventually lead to permanent baldness.

2. Why does my hair appear to become thinner as I age?
With hair loss, the hair follicle progressively miniaturizes or becomes smaller as we age. Hence, the hair that is produced by that follicle also becomes smaller and thinner in diameter. A the hair becomes finer and thinner, it also will lose its pigment and spend less time in the Anagen stage (the active growth phase) which may vary between 2 – 4 years in length.

3. Does stress, drugs, or trauma cause hair loss?
Extreme levels of stress may be the cause of hair loss. Certain autoimmune diseases, drug use, or severe nutritional deficiency may also promote pre-mature hair loss.

4. What are some common “wives tales” regarding hair loss?

  1. That hair loss is only derived from the mothers side of the family. Not true, we may experience the genetic encoding for hair loss in the womb, however the trait can be traced to both sides of the family and may go back to 7 generations.
  2. Wearing hats frequently can cause hair loss. No evidence has been found to prove that hair loss can be triggered by frequently wearing hats.

5. What are the treatment options for hair loss?
The active ingredient in Rogain known as minoxidil as well as the pill Propecia are the only two drugs approved by the FDA to stop hair loss and regrow hair. Recently laser hair restoration also has been proven affective by the FDA to stop hair loss and restore lost hair.

6. Who is a good candidate for hair restoration?
Since Apollo Image Enhancement Ctr specializes in all known forms of hair restoration, we are capable of working with any type of hair loss from the beginning stages of thinning to total head hair loss (Alopecia Totalis).

Laser Hair Therapy FAQ

1. What is Laser Hair Therapy (LHT)?
LHT is the use of cold lasers that induce blood flow to the top of the scalp which in turn creates positive and healthy hair growth.

2. What are “cold lasers” and are they safe to use?
Cold lasers are infrared lasers that do not have a thermal component so they will NOT vaporize or burn tissue. Our lasers are considered a class 3 cosmetic devise and are rendered safe for topical use by the FDA.

3. What are the benefits of LHT?

  • Increase in blood flow to the top of the scalp by up to 55% which in turn increases hair growth in follicle still capable of producing hair.
  • Stops hair loss in 85% of patients Regulation of sebaceous gland activity, for people with overly dry or oily scalps.
  • Repairs damaged hair shafts Increases thickness of individual hairs by up 25% per hair providing much thicker and fuller appearance
  • Relieves irritated itchy scalp conditions
  • Decreases recovery time when used in conjunction with hair transplants

4. How do these “cold lasers” stop hair loss and regrow lost hair?
Since hair growth depends so heavily on proper blood flow, LHT’s increase in blood flow induces the follicle to produce a healthy good looking hair. Our program focuses and defends against the main known causes of hair loss such as, insufficient blood supply at the scalp level, improper nutritional intake, controls excessive levels of DHT, and breaks down oil deposits on the scalp that will eventually lead to hair loss.

5. How long have lasers been used for hair regrowth?
Apollo has used lasers for 15 – 20 years to assist in stopping hair loss. However, as with any technology, over the past 4 years we have improved the the results of LHT significantly. In February ’07 certain lasers were approved by the FDA to stop hair loss and regrow lost hair!
